Advanced Metrics

by | Jun 8, 2025

Empire Velo’s Advance Metrics are about uncovering unique dimensions that bring deeper insights into professional cycling. Whether you’re new to the sport, wondering why only a handful of riders seem to be working in a massive peloton, a dedicated fan searching for a way to evaluate domestiques, or a team looking to analyze performance against historical results—we’re here to provide the data-driven perspectives you need.

How It Works

At Empire Velo, we believe cycling metrics should be more than just numbers—they should uncover the deeper stories behind every race, rider, and strategy. Our approach to data analysis is built on two key perspectives:

  1. Definition & Calculation: Every metric starts as an idea—a way to quantify the sport in a new light. We break down its purpose, components, and methodology, providing a clear formula so that anyone—fans, analysts, or teams—can calculate the metric themselves. Whether it’s measuring rider workload, evaluating breakaway efficiency, or defining the impact of teamwork in the peloton, we ensure each metric is transparent and accessible.
  2. Application & Storytelling: Data gains true value when it’s brought to life. We explore how each metric shapes race strategies, uncovers historical patterns, and highlights a rider’s role within a team. By applying these insights to real-world scenarios, we transform raw numbers into compelling narratives—revealing the tactics, sacrifices, and moments that define professional cycling.

Group Rank

Group Rank consolidates all riders receiving the same time at the finish line into one rank. Group Rank is about giving a  rider a fair rank based on the circumstances of a race and generally accepted peloton psychology.

Team Best Result

Team Best Result (TBR) is a metric that captures a cycling team’s success by recording the highest finish position of any rider in a race. Averaging TBR scores across multiple races gives a quick snapshot of overall team performance, while year-over-year comparisons highlight improvement or decline. Looking at TBR in different contexts reveals a team’s strengths, weaknesses, and adaptability across racing styles and terrains.
