Definition
Team Best Result is a metric to quantify team success. The value is determined by the team’s highest-placed rider at the finish line. Each team records a Team Best Result as soon as their first rider crosses the finish line, regardless of other team members’ results. A team’s best placed rider finishes a race in tenth, then the team’s Best Result is 10. A rider finishes fourth, then the team’s Best Result for that race is 4.
Usage
Average TBR
By calculating average TBR, we can assess a team’s overall performance. Comparing a team’s TBR from year to year allows for an evaluation of their progress. Additionally, strengths and weaknesses can be discerned by analyzing a team’s TBR in various contexts, such as one-day versus stage races, World Tour versus Pro races, or Spring classics in Belgium versus Italy.
TBR Variability
By looking at the spread of a team’s TBR, we can assess a team’s overall constancy.
Formula
- One-Day Road Races
- Team Best Result is the finishing position of the first rider for each team to cross the finish line, as reported by the race organizer to the UCI.
- Stage Races – Stage Results
- Road Race: Team Best Result is the highest Group Rank for each team, based on the result times reported by the race organizer to the UCI.
- Team Time Trial: Team Best Result is the team’s final rank after all teams have completed the time trial, based on the race organizer’s criteria for when each team’s time is calculated (ie: first rider across the line, third rider across the line, etc.). Time Trial TBR is always sequential from 1 to the total number of teams that completed the time trial.
- Individual Time Trial: Team Best Result is the finishing position of the first rider for each team to cross the finish line, as reported by the race organizer to the UCI.
- Stage Races – General Classification
- Team Best Result is the finishing position of the highest placed rider for each team, as reported by the race organizer to the UCI.
Parameters & Constraints
TBR applies to trade teams only. National, Continental, and World Championships are excluded. A rider’s placement in their national championship does not impact their trade team’s TBR.
Alternatives
Team Best Result, as defined here, refers to achieving the best possible placement at the finish line. However, teams may have alternative objectives during a race. This section describes variants of TBR that could be used to explore other potential team goals in future analyses.
TBRpoints
Determined by the sprint points earned by a team during a race. TBRpoints enables comparative analysis between teams who goal orient on winning the sprint jersey.
TBRmountain
Determined by the mountain points earned by a team during a race. TBRmountain enables comparative analysis between teams who goal orient on winning the KOM jersey.
TBRyouth
Determined by the young rider classification during a race. TBRyouth enables comparative analysis between teams who goal orient on winning the Young Rider competition.
TBRbreakaway
Determined by some TBD formula. Some metric that enables comparative analysis between teams that target breakaways.
